MEET THE TEAM

Our Story

A couple of crafty Kats, we began working together when we realized our work displayed well together, we started sharing stalls at markets and sharing space for open studios.

Our friendship grew and we set up our own market together - Dunkeld Craft Collective, a monthly summer market running from the grounds of the Taybank Hotel, which ran with a loyal following of customers and artists for several years until Covid forced our closure.

In October 2020 we took the scary leap into opening our first shop together. We were mid-pandemic and Kat had just had a beautiful wee baby girl - the timing was terrible, but shops don’t come up in Dunkeld often and we had lost our market and our main source of trading!

Kat ‘n’ Kat opened its doors with facemasks and social distancing, but we made it through the first few months, past the next lock down and into the next year.

Our next challenge was the notice to quit our beloved shop, it took us almost a year to find a new shop, but eventually, our new landlord came to the rescue and offered us the Old Smiddy.

Possibly the coolest, most quirky wee spot in the village.

We now have bigger workshops, bigger shop space and a lovely sunny outside space.

We have been able to take in lots more local artists and makers, we sell plants for a local nursery and we now have Johnny B on our team looking after the shop side of things so we can focus on our making.

Our Ethos

We have made a happy, creative and sustainable environment here. We live in the village and walk to work, the perfect way to start and finish a working day! We shop as locally as possible and recycle and reuse everything we can, as do most of our makers. We try to produce the minimum possible carbon footprint and have zero airmiles in our shop.

Our artists are all local, most of them based within 6 miles of Dunkeld.... one lives so close she delivers her stock in a wheelbarrow!! We strongly believe in supporting local art and creativity and every artists right to earn a fair wage.

We take the minimum commission we can afford from our artists - for so many years we paid out most of our takings in commission to shops and galleries so we know how hard it is to earn a decent return for the hours that artists put in.

We have great working relationships with our artists and good friendships also, we feel this is reflected in their work and in our shop - its a truly happy place!
